Solidarity Sports:
Nana, Leyla and Benjamin’s Story

Through long-time supporter and ambassador Sally Strahan, The Hurlingham Club Foundation was introduced to Solidarity Sports and the children and families they support. The Foundation offered two swimming sessions that were not currently taken up by members, and Solidarity Sports reached out to two families in crisis who would benefit from the opportunity.

Nana, mother to Leyla and Benjamin, was pushed under a train in Sweden aged 5. As a result, she lost an arm and is considered a vulnerable adult. She married and came to the UK but was severely mistreated by her husband and his family. Subjected to regular physical and verbal abuse, it was through the support of her children’s school teacher that she was able to escape. She and the children lived in a refuge for a while during this time.

The family’s living conditions, and the state of their mother’s fragile mental health, had a significant impact on Leyla and Benjamin. Both children were anxious and struggling to concentrate in school. Thankfully, the children were referred to Solidarity Sports to provide them with a space to play and access support, whilst providing Nana with much-needed respite.

Layla and Benjamin were offered one of our swimming lesson slots to get them out of the small room the family all shared, provide them with physical activity, help alleviate anxiety and build their confidence. As they progressed in their lessons, Nana was invited to join them as well. This simple gesture has been life changing for Nana and the children.

I want you to know, what you have done for Leyla and Benjamin will stay with me for life. Seeing them get more and more confident, and how they are less shy and more outgoing. They love learning to swim, and having this opportunity has affected us in ways I can’t explain...

Nana expressed that the family being together in the pool is the most enjoyable moment in their lives. The children are progressing very well and Nana is “healing her inner child”. The Foundation also provides the family with dinner after the swimming sessions, which has been an added benefit as the room they live in does not have a kitchen.

As I’m raising my children, I’m healing at the same time. I had to stop my swimming, due to me falling and breaking my elbow. It’s been 19 years. And Alistair encouraged me to get into the pool and swim... How can I ever thank Alistair, you and Miss Hazel for all of your kindness. You guys have helped me and saved me in ways I can’t express.
